This is the oldest hotel operating in Japan. The time-honored hotel was opened in 1893 (Meiji 26) for foreign tourists visiting Japan, on the recommendation of Dr. Hepburn, who is well-known for creating the Roman alphabet system of writing Japanese. The hotel was originally a two-story structure with 30 guestrooms. It was a pioneer the dawn of the Japanese hotel industry. Rich in Japanese taste, it features a motif similar to that of the Toshogu Shrine, designed to entertain foreign tourists. Although it functions like a Western hotel, its architectural design and decor are purely Japanese. Located in Nikko, a summer resort developed as a place for foreigners in Japan to socialize, the Kanaya Hotel has been renovated and expanded a number of times while still maintaining its original style and atmosphere.
