Most of the public gymnasium facility in Chofu, Tokyo is submerged underground. Because the site is located within the Jindai Botanical Park, the gymnasium, more than most structures, needed to be built in harmony with the overall scenery in the region, using the park backdrop to best advantage, yet without disrupting any of the views it offers. This, combined with Chofu's type-1 exclusive residential zoning requirements -- limiting building height to 10 meters -- dictated a creative, semi-subterranean architectural approach. Soil dredged in the construction was used to build up a hill camouflaging the above-ground portion of the gym. With a living roof established by planting a variety of plants atop the building, the Chofu Municipal Gymnasium not only blends with the surrounding botanical park, it is completely subsumed by it. In the facility's design, the dredged turf sod is packed far below the roof, all the way to the underground courtyard, thus freeing up all the space surrounding the gymnasium for the public to use.
