Flexibility is an M-Wave theme, since the arena will not only be a Mecca for speed skating but will also host a wide range of sporting, cultural and trade events.
The roof is composed of a series of "floating suspension bridge" units, each with a span of 80 meters, formed from rows of ribs made from steel plate and laminated layers of Shinshu larch wood.
The terraced arrangement of the units creates a mountain ridgeline effect that reminds the viewer of the mountains of Nagano.
The suspended ceiling of laminated ribs and the lattice-like walls that slope down and outwards create a space inside the area that is dynamic yet retains the warmth of the wood.
A pair of semicircular mobile stands move along the long axis of the arena, and act as space partition. This enhances the freedom of use for such a large venue, heightens the ringside feeling at events, and maximizes the effective utilization of space inside the arena.
