Xi C Area is a new town development project with a total of a million square meters of floor space on a rolling land area in the suburbs of Chongqing. The plan seeks to make use of natural conditions as they are, avoiding to the extent possible any changes to geographic contours in the name of accommodating the project. Thus, naturally occurring slopes and prominent hillcrests have been left intact, and with them their natural beauty, grace and welcoming openness of nature. The man-made construction is fashioned to look as though it had been gently placed within the environment, rather than attempting to command it. That is the essential thrust of the plan: timeless nature growing together with the more recent human arrivals as the people build their lives in the XiC Area.
