Built with grant aid provided by the Japanese government, the Matara campus was designed as a model educational facility, offering community college-level instruction geared primarily for training high school graduates to teach in Sri Lanka's elementary and junior high schools. Located in the south Asian monsoon region, the oceanic climate of Matara is characterized by its gentle year-round trade winds that help keep humidity down, even when temperatures reach 30 degrees (C) and beyond. The breeze -- particularly delightful in the shade and throughout the evening - figures prominently in the Matara campus design theme. School facilities are laid out to invite the soothing wind to blow lightly through the campus, keeping students cool and comfortable.
